How Do I Care for My Locs?

How Do I Care for My Locs?

If you're looking to switch up your style, locing your hair is a great way to do so. But, it's important to make sure you approach the process safely and properly in order to minimize potential damage. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to loc your hair:

Find an Expert

It's best to find someone who specializes in chemical-free locking methods or knows how to use tools that won’t damage or weaken the ends of your hair. Make sure you ask about their experience with all types of hair types before making any decisions.

Decide on a Maintenance Schedule

A good rule of thumb is to plan for at least one consultation with a professional every six months and regular maintenance sessions every four weeks to keep your locks healthy and stylish. This gives you time to talk with your stylist about any specific needs or requests that you have.

Purchase Hair Care Products Specifically For Locs

It's important that you purchase the right types of products made specifically for locs in order to keep them clean and smelling fresh without stripping away essential oils from them. Look for products with natural ingredients that are safe for all hair types and gentle enough not to cause irritation or dryness. Avoid using bar soap, since this will strip away protective oils from the scalp and locs themselves, leading to breakage and dryness that can be difficult and costly to repair in the long run.

Be Consistent With Your Routine

To avoid unraveling in between maintenance appointments, make sure you maintain hygiene regularly such as shampooing 2 – 4 times per week, depending on your individual preferences as well as covering your hair every night with a silk scarf or bonnet cover when preferred. Additionally, try moisturizing regularly (as often as needed) with natural-based conditioners or oil-free dips like shea butter or aloe vera mixed with water and bottled on spray bottles for easier application if desired!

Pamper Your Locks

It's key that you shower your locks with love by giving yourself regular scalp massages while applying moisturizing treatments - such as light oils, deep conditioning masks, etc., followed by brushing through once weekly. This will keep them strong enough with positive progress but also prevent tangles that may occur if neglected too much over time!
